Preparing and Maintaining Your Fire

When setting and lighting your fire with hardwood logs or fuel of your choosing, it is important you know how to correctly prepare and maintain it. When it comes to fire, you want to ensure your flame is maintained to make the most of it. Also, it is important to make sure your flame starts quickly and efficiently, while also burning clean air.

Two key factors when starting and up-keeping your fire are process and product. Using the correct products such as our hardwood logs ensures your fire and burning environment are to the highest standard. However, great quality products are unable to function without proper maintenance and routine. We understand that people may be unsure of which product they need for their fire, which is why at Longfield Logs we only provide the right products for the job. When it comes to the products themselves, it is important to think about which products you may require to maximise efficiency when burning. Kindling and newspaper works wonders when starting up your flame and is extremely cost effective. Only a small amount of kindling and newspaper is needed to boost your flame, and at a cost-effective price you will never have to worry about running out. Kindling is smaller bits of wood which are much more flammable than full sized softwood or hardwood logs. Setting your kindling alight allows the fire to spread quickly and cover the surface area of the hardwood logs with ease. Without kindling a fire is much more difficult to start and can potentially fail early…with high quality kindling this will never happen. Newspaper works well when combined with kindling, as newspaper is a form of kindling itself. This paper is very flammable, more so than wood kindling, however it does not burn for long. Igniting the newspaper first allows the fire to rapidly spread to the kindling, which will then start your fire.

After you have received your equipment, it is important to consider the type of burning environment/device you possess. The process of maintaining an effective flame varies depending on which burner you are using. There are many benefits to using a Wood Burning Stove, not only does the stove provide great heat but it creates a relaxed and comfortable environment overall. Using a wood burning stove is quite simple and hassle-free. Classic wood burning stoves have an open front with a wide-open space. This allows easy access and provides convenient room for larger logs/more logs. Applying a single layer of kindling underneath your softwood or hardwood logs, starting from the back, helps boost the ignition greatly. The open front allows a great flow of air to let your fire breathe, while also directing the heat into your room. More modern stoves, and Log Burners may possess an air flow control door. These doors can be opened and closed to increase and decrease the amount of airflow the fire receives. Having the door fully open allows the flame to start without problems, keeping the door slightly ajar allows the flame to build up. Once you have a healthy flame you can fully close the door. This stops airflow from putting out the fire and stops any potential harmful fumes coming out of your fireplace.

With the right product and process you can keep your home the perfect temperature all year round.
